My wife has had a cold for the last twelve hours and during this time our baby has been kicking much less frequently and much less strongly. My wife has also been experiencing some mild but persistent discomfort in her lower abdomen.

Should we be worried?

DOCTOR IF YOU'RE WORRIED

A cold will not cause fetal discomfort. In addition a "kick count" is not concidered a good measure of fetal condition until 28 weeks. Your wife likely has a stomach virus and just needs some time in bed. Congrats on the baby!

A similar situation happened to me when I was coming down with bronchitis. I would call the ob to let him or her know the situation, but as long as you feel the baby I think things are fine. Sometimes when you get sick the baby is also affected by your feelings and if you are under the weather you may see a difference in the behavior of the baby. Try having your wife lie on her left side and drinking a cold and sugary beverage....you should get more activity and reassurance by doing this.

Dehydration is a common side effect of being ill and can cause the baby to move less, this is not generally a problem, however if she is concerned she can go to the ER for an ultrasound. They are usually pretty nice to pregnant women.

In the mean time I suggest you get her to drink some hot water with lemon and honey. The water and sugar may cause the baby to move and should make your wife feel better too.

If you are concerned, I would have your wife call her doctor. If the decrease in movement is significant (i.e. your wife hasn't felt the baby move for the whole day) ... it might be a cause for concern. The pain in her lower abdomen might be related to ligaments stretching (normal for this time during pregnancy) but I would have her call the doctor's office when you can just to ease her mind.

If it makes you feel any better I had the flu when pregnant with my son (right around 4-5 months as well) and my son is perfectly healthy.

Best wishes.

well ofcourse you should contact her obgyn and tell him/her of the potential problem and what he/she thinks you should do. The last thing you want to do is sit in an emergency room for 8 hours. You mentioned the baby is kicking less and not as strong, it may very well be that the baby is just resting. As long as the baby is still kicking everything should be just fine.

;)
P.s. The person that mentioned that you should give your wife some honey is incorrect. Pregnant women cannot/should not eat any honey for the bacteria that is in honey. It can be unsafe to the baby.

"Here's one common approach: Choose a time of day when your baby tends to be active. (Ideally, you'll want to do the counts at roughly the same time each day.) Sit quietly or lie on your side so you won't get distracted. Time how long it takes for you to feel ten distinct movements — kicks, twitches, and whole body movements all count. If you don't feel ten movements in two hours, stop counting and call your midwife or doctor. " As found on babycenter.com. This is for the third trimester though. You didn't mention how far along she is.

With the discomfort, she might want to see the doc to just be sure. It can't hurt to go get a sonagram and be sure everything is OK. Remeber also, when you are pregnant, you immune system works slower. She may have a hard time shaking the cold. I had one for over a month when I was preg.

Maybe the baby is feeling a little drowsy from the virus too? I wouldn't worry too much but if youre still concerned tomorrow get the dr to check..good luck

Why are you asking us? Go and get checked - though I am sure she is fine. The baby will be drowsy along with your wife. I don't think a cold virus can cross the placenta though, so everything should be fine.
