Which is better Norton or McAfee? Cox Comm does not like Norton. Norton has messed up my Microsoft Outlook email since I re-signed with them. How can I shut off Norton for awhile to see if my email improves? I used to have a box that said disable and enable but it is not there now.

From my experience, Macafee is better but Nod32 is the best. It only costs about $40 US. Norton is a resource hog as well as being slow. It's also prone to false positives and downright missing some nasties.
Check in the program settings in Norton. Right click on the Norton icon is sytray (where the clock is) and open it from there. There also should be an option to temporarily disable the active scan. Just remember to turn it back on. You can also try Norton's support page.
Sorry I can't be more specific, I dumped Norton after several problems with virus's and trojans that Norton missed which caused me to have to delve into cleaning this garbage out the hard way. Nod32 generally nails them on entry and always on scan.

In my experience (which is pretty extensive with this stuff)
Norton uses more computer resources (more demanding on your ram and processor)
McAfee is more user friendly
They both are a pain in the butt to get live support on.
As to how effective they are. I would say its close. Although Norton is pretty quick on developing new virus definitions.

My favorite firewall over all listed is Kerio. However Kerio has moved away from the home user toward a corporate-enterprise firewall only which is quite expensive.

I'd consider these over Norton or McAfee for your internet security:

Zone Alarm FREE www.zonelabs.com (firewall)
Avast! Internet Virus Scanner FREE (virus scanner) www.avast.com
SpyBot - (anti-spyware) -www.spybot.com
AdAware - www.adaware.com (anti-adware)

Those should keep you covered for your internet security. These programs should be easier to use and won't stuff up your Outlook like Norton has.

start - run 'msconfig' - enter - in the services tab norton has 3? that start, uncheck those - then in the startup tab uncheck the rest of the norton files.

this will prevent norton from loading alltogether.
