I have a similar situation... I live in CT and work in MA. I pay state income tax to both. However, in my case, this is how it works. Since I work in MA, income tax is taken out for MA. When I file, the amount of CT income tax I would owe is calculated. The amount of MA income tax I have paid is subtracted, and I get stuck paying the difference. CT is always more.

You owe NJ taxes, as your "permanent" residence is there. I suppose that if you want to change to MD, you can get a drivers licence there, and make a formal declaration to NJ that you've moved.
