Offside Position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
* he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent
* A player is not in an offside position if:
* he is in his own half of the fi eld of play or
* he is level with the second last opponent or
* he is level with the last two opponents
Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
* interfering with play or
* interfering with an opponent or
* gaining an advantage by being in that position
No Offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
* a goal kick or
* a throw-in or
* a corner kick
Infringements/Sanctions
For any offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred.

when the offense kicks the ball to pass to a person, the person being passed to has to be in front of the last defender when it is kicked.
This rule is implemented so that teams cannot just put everyone on offense on the opponent's goal and try to score.
There are many different guidelines to offsides, like when someone is offside, but you pass to a person that is not offside, it is not offside (but it is when it is in the box i think). It gets complicated, but the basic is that the person is behind the last defender when it is kicked

It is one the opponent is behind the last defender and is being passed to he is immediately called offsides, so you can't just hang out with the goalie and wait for a breakaway pass.

the player who is offsides is behind the defense. in other words, imagine the other team's defense. their farthest back player has an imaginary line drawn parallel to the touch line. if the offensive player is past that line, they are offsides. this rule is used to keep offensive players from "cherrypicking."

example-
team red is defending
and team blue is coming down the feild with the ball
team red is at the center line BUT doesnt pass the center line and at least ONE player from the blue team goes past the last red player (besides the golie ) and doesnt have the ball or passes the last player before the ball passes the last red player then the person is off sides
there is NO off sides when-
- there is a throw in
-when there is corner kick unless after the ball is kicked then the person who kicked the ball is off sides if the ball isnt there and he/she is past the last defender.
hopes this answers your question!! <3!

if one player is waiting for the ball past the defenders and right in front of the goalie one player can just pass the ball to that player and the p,layer can score thats why nobody from the other team can go past the defenders
