Here is the deal. The first thing to emerge was a protoplasm that lead to the chicken. This creature would have reproduced asexually through cell mitosis for eons before evolutionary distress would have required asemetrical bonding to produce viable strands of DNA which could adapt quickly to changing environments on Earth. Thus, that which we know as an "egg" would not have existed for millions of years after the building blocks of what would become the modern "chicken" had already been in existance.
Evidence suggests that the first avian-like creatures would have either had live births, or have give birth to semi-formed embryos that would have finnished gestation in a leathery sack on the female's body, much like modern marsupials.
In short, the chicken did, indeed come first.

Th chicken came first because God created it. And then it growed into a hen and God created the rooster, and from that day on, hens have been laying eggs. That's my theory, little bit crazy for a non-believer, but I believe in God, so I wont have this teasing question in my head for no longer.
This question has been teasing people and even scientists since always and that's one of the reasons because Christians claim that God exists lol Well I'm not sure of the last statement actually, but for a believer makes sense.
Happy New Year

The chicken emerged from an egg, which was laid by a chicken, which emerged from an egg, which was laid by a chicken and so on. But not ad infinitum. There must have been a time far enough back when a bird that was only just a chicken emerged from an egg laid by a bird that was very nearly, but not quite, a chicken.

The egg. Animals have been hatching out of eggs long before the birds existed. The first true bird must have descended from a reptile, and reptiles lay eggs.

the chicken evolved into existence. So with that knowledge, you can deduce that the chicken was born by an egg....and therefore the egg came first.
