What a great question!! I'm over 56 and the few times I have tried the underwires I found them extremely uncomfortable. I believe that they are intended to offer a rigid support at the base of the bra... for me it wasn't worth the discomfort... I'm into comfort, and always have been!

to make boobs look like perfectly pert and round orbs irrespective of their natural shape an size. In terms of your discomfort bras should never be given or received as gifts especially if you have never worn a particular type before. You should have an opportunity to try them on before you buy. I find that generally underwire bras can be uncomfortable. But I have found that on rare occasions I have found a couple that actually shape me well and fit comfortably. You hardly sound old enough to be seen in these, but some in fact are designed to be worn ornamentally for a short period of time and are not designed to be worn under clothes. This may be the case with the ones you got as gifts. In which case unless your size changes in the next few you may want to keep them to wear to bed with that special someone!

to lift, shape, and support your breast. i think underwires are the greatest thing bra makers ever did for full figured woman.

if your bra is uncomfortable it might not be the right size and style for you. you can be fitted and sized for your correct bra size @ a department store or the mall. you'd be surprised how many of us are wearing the wrong bra.

YES SUPPORT, BUT IF YOU HAVE A SMALL CUP SIZE YOU CAN GO WITH OUT UNDERWIRE. IF YOU HAVE A CUP C OR ABOVE U DEFINATELY NEED THE EXTRA SUPPORT

they are for support so usually women with the bigger tatas find them helpful. . . they can be uncomfortable. . . so if you like and need them just find some with more padding where the wire is
