While it has been the latest craze in social networking, I wouldn't generalize it as an obsession with everyone. I do think that the current generation in that age bracket is a lot more "connected" than previous generations. Sometimes it only takes a few years to create a generation gap...

After all, this is the first generation that grew up with the internet, and the tools that allow us to keep in contact with each other. So, I think that it is only natural that tools like Facebook, MySpace, and others are used by that age bracket as a means to stay connected with friends and family, just as the previous generation uses personal planners, address books, mail, telephones, and other tools.

probably the same reason why 18 year old students are obsessed with facebook.
I enjoy facebook, but I don't spend all my time on there. Some people just don't have lives!

By the way for people who do not know, facebook is an on line community that connects to people who are also in their community(ex: schools, cities). It's also open to high schoolers.

Actually facebook is opened to anybody now. And so now everyone is going to be obsessed with it. It was once a place where college students could hang out and have a site for themselves. It was sorta like a myspace....but now...everyone has overtaken it.

Because they want to skive off, and otherwise are bored. I am at uni (graduate level) and have far more important things to be concerned with.
Okay, well I am here on yahoo Answers, but that is for fun, and to contribute, I hope.
Face book is something I want nothing to do with, if nothing else, privacy issues with having information on some server.

I wondered that, too. I work with students and so I joined Facebook so see what they were all talking about. I don't really see why it's so exciting...
