I have a newborn thats 9 days old. She is having problems going to the bathroom. Her stool is very hard and won't come out without her straining and then she screams the whole time she is trying to go. When she goes it is only like a little pellet! Does anyone have any suggestions??????

Hello,

When my twins were newborns and were constipated or had hard stools my doctor suggested we put 1 teaspoon of sugar to 3 oz or water or 1oz of Karo Syrup to 2 oz of water and if you can, use purified or distilled water. Tap water is gross and tastes nasty.

Hope this helps you............ : -O

Are you breast feeding or formula feeding? If formula, there is probably too much iron in her formula. This is most likely the cause. Give her some non-iron fortified formula, every few bottles to try and help. Or you may just have to switch her off iron all together for a while. If you are breastfeeding, try warm water from a bottle between feedings. But breast feeding usually does not cause this problem. Karo syrup has also worked for some, as well as mineral oil in her bottle. Sometimes it is necessary to use a suppository of she gets too constipated. She is still young and will take her body some time to get used to digesting food.
At 9 days you should be visiting the pediatrician soon for a check up, talk to him about the problem and see what he suggests.

karo syrup?? nooo.. a baby 9 days old should never have anything more then either formula or water..
water will help.. she is prob drinking too much formula.. if she wont take the water plain, add a touch of sgr to it, not alot, but just a touch.. most babies dont like water bc it has no taste to it..
but you dont want her stools to be runny either, but she should have more then just a lil pellet..
a baby that young, their stomachs are sensitive
i have 3 sons ages 16, 11 and 14, its been a while since ive had a lil baby around but you never forget what helps.. also.. if no one at your dr's office answers.. call the emergency room and ask to speak to a nurse for help..

My son was a little constipated so I would give him about an ounce of water...that always did the trick. Also, if she is on formula try a formula that says "gentle" which is made with whey proteins! If the problem persists then I'd call your Dr., I just tried to avoid the medicine situation with my son and the water did work...that's what my Dr. told me to do. Make sure it's not too much though!

I remember with my first child that he had the same thing. My Dr. just encouraged me to have him drink water...I'm not sure why but this seemed to help. Or if that doesn't help you might want to think of changing formula's if you're bottle feeding, I know that some formula's are high in iron and that sometimes makes the stool a little harder. Good Luck!

Ok...add some brown sugar to a bottle either with expressed milk or formula...or even cold boiled water...just a teaspoon should do it, this will soften amost right away, your baby is constipated, rabbit pellet type poo = constipation. If the sugar doesnt work, then repeat at the next feed. Brown sugar will not harm your baby at all...it will just help her go.

While she is straining lift her legs so that her knees touch her tummy, this will help releive her discomfort while pooing.

Good luck...

The milk you are giving her is upsetting her stomach. Why dont you breastfeed? Try lansoyl buy it at the drugstore to soften her stool, and CHANGE her formula or START breastfeeding . Poor baby.

try giving her a little lukewarm water in a bottle. Fruit juice is a great natural way for older babies, but she might be too young. Maybe give shout out to your pediatrician.

give her a bit of water sometimes it can help, also when if can tell when shes trying to go the lay her on her back and push both of her legs towards her sides( to make it look like shes squatting on her back) my grandma told me to do that with my daughter and it worked.
