I'm going to Japan to work on the 13th of January, and my company says that they will give me a visa.

However, I want to know if I need some sort of permission from the consulate general in order to make the trip. Or can I just enter Japan with just a valid passport?

The company would be the main sponsor, they would give you all the information and instructions. You can ask your future employer about this procedures regarding visa etc. if you are going to Japan for work purpose..You need documents to prove that you are going to work there legally and show it to Consulate General to obtain visa if you do it by yourself..
If you are only visiting and if visa is not required , then you can enter Japan with valid passport. Remember, visitors are not allowed to work in Japan and you have 90 days to remain.
Good day!

You may enter with just your passport. No permission slip needed. :-) Sounds like you have a work visa and you should be fine. Just like students that come here to go to the university.

It depends on what country you are a citizen of. For example, Americans, Canadians, UK, and most EU nation citizens can enter Japan on a 90 day tourist or business basis. Check with your country's embassy in Japan to be sure.
