ok, we live in the year 2007 so that is the 21st century a.d..
but is it the 3rd millenium a.d. counting one millenium from 0-999. another from 1000-1999. and this one from 2000-2999??? so is it the thrid millenium or the second?

Actualy the milleniums run thusly...1-1000 was the first millenium (you don't start counting anything with 0), 1001 to 2000 was the seconds millenium and January 1, 2001 at 12:00:01 am was the first moment of the third millenium which will end at midnight on December 31, 3000.

When counting things we start from 1, not zero. The first millenium began at the beginning of year 1 and ended at the end of year 1000. Similarly, the third millenium began at the beginning of 2001 and will end at the end of the year 3000.
That's why Stanley Kubrick titled his movie "2001" --that number is significant because it signals the beginning of a new millenium, 2000 is no big deal, it's just the last year of the old one.

Yes.
A baby is in it's 'first year', even though not being 'one'.
We are in C21, as you observe, although the year is not '2106', but '2006'.
In the same way, we are in the '3rd Millenium', although year is not '3006'.
