Very gently.
I don't have a vagina, so I try to be as gentle, understanding, and communicative with the patient as possible. (And it seems to work -- many women have commented that it was the easiest exam they'd ever had, although I don't think any normal woman actually enjoys it...)
If you're asking for a detailed explanation of what a doctor does during a vaginal exam, see:

why is your daughter getting an exam if she is not sexually active she does not require one before age 18 if she is sexually active than hopefully you've had talks with her about her body and protection. since you've had a child than you have experienced an exam yourself. use simple terms and explain what the Doctor has done during your exam. the need for honesty is NOW

the doc will insert a speculum to open the vagina. the speculum will enclose around the cervix. he/she will then swap the inner opening of the cervix with a long q-tip like object (to check for abnormal cell growth). Then he/she will insert fingers to feel each ovary to check for abnormalites. lastly, the doc will also feel on her abdomen & prob give her a breast examination. I hope all goes well with the exam. I know it can be awkard and some discomfort but as long as she relaxes (as best as possible) it will go much smoother & painless. I hope i helped with answering ur question!

i do this with natural sun light or just regular room lighting.
i don't bother with gloves or any of that silly stuff no i get right in there and feel around smell it and taste it to see if its gone bad. i think this good old fashion method is best and so far all my patients have loved my method of exam
