I climbed Mt. Whitney in California. It is the highest point in the contiguous 48 states at over 14,000 feet. There is a good trail to the top and these days I think you have to get a reservation. I made the climb in the 50's when it wasn't so crowded. I camped on top with three other people. We wanted to see the sunrise from the summit but we were fogged in that morning. I don't think people are allowed to overnight on top any more. The top is almost flat and the western side has a gradual slope but the eastern face is very steep and makes a good climb for someone with mountaineering skills.
The trail approaches the summit from the south below a ridge. The ambitious climber can bag one or two addional 14 K peaks along that ridge before getting to the top of Whitney.

The highest peak I climbed was in Colorado. It was near
the continental divide. We drove part way and walked the rest.
It was at Hancock lake (West of Salida) , but a lightening storm drove us from the top. We were scared of being hit by lightening.
The altitude there was almost 12,500 ft above sea level.
One can drive all the way to the top of Pikes peak which is also
in Colorado. It is over 14,000 feet.

Mt Etna in sicily - you can drive three quarters of the way, then a cable car for a bit, then a 4x4 then walk the last bit. Its 12.000 feet and an active volcano. Same trip i climbed the mountain on the island of Stromboli - about 8000 feet - another active volcano but you have to walk about three hours....fun though

Mt. Mclaughlin in Oregon. It was only 9,400 ft., but it was dramatic all the same.
The sense of accomplishment from reaching the summit is breathtaking, and the view was undescribable. What you see from a plane isn't even CLOSE to what you see from a mountain.
If you're going to start mountain climbing, start small. Mt. Mclaughlin is a good starter mountain. You'll need to visit Medford or Klamath Falls, Oregon to go see it.

Mount Haleakala is the highest that I have gone. It was used as training for the Apollo astronauts because the terrain is similar to the Moon's. Plus it means a trip to Maui, so that is why you should go!
