You have the right to shoot as soon as you feel reasonably sure that your personal safety is at risk. Of course we do live in a litigious society and you will be sued by someone. It's always a good idea to fire a warning shot. I prefer to fire my warning shots after I shoot the intruder.

In Wisconsin, you must shoot when the person enters all the way thru the door or window, but shot to kill, not injure. The family may try to sue civilly. Check out nra.com for more answers.

Every American citizen has a right to protect his/her property and life. HOW it can be done legally without any ramifications depends on individual state laws.
