It does sound like depression or bipolar disorder and seeing a psychiatrist or at least a pediatrician to screen him would be a good idea. What was his father like? Did he or anyone in his family show these tendencies or does depression run in your family?

my cousin had the exact same symptoms. he was often biting himself, scratching hitting himself on the head, and things liek that his mom and dad were really worried they didnt know what to do because of course they didnt want him to hurt himself. maybe ur son is feeling that u are trying to replace his dad for anotehr stranger i mean he is 11 years old and kids dont understand it like adults do. so for his sake and well being you should put ur love life on hold for a while until ur son gets the hel p he needs. im sure he is a good klid, but you have heard of girls and guys cutting themselves to numb themselves of the emotional pain they are feeling inside right? so why dont u take him to a pyschologist that can help him a child pycholigist if u must. if you dont take action now it can be too late. and now my cousin is older and he no longer does those things anymore and i hope u understand ur sons point of view on u dating other men, he just doesnt want a stranger he doesnt know as a father. i hope i helped good luck!

You didnt disapline him right from when he was a little kid. Some parents are just way too soft on their children and if you want to prevent stuff like this from happening they got to disipline your child. Even if his father died thats no reason for you to let him do what he is doing. Disipline him. And i dont mean "Go to your room, your grounded!!" i mean whip him. Not abusivley but in a displinary way.

i really don't think there's anything wrong with him my son gets very upset at times too. i caught him beating him self in the head when he got really mad at his mom something she grounded him over for kids nowadays they have no control over the things they do. that's how they get out all the anger other then taking it out on their parents which i think is a good thing that's my own opinion.

It sounds as though he is having a hard time accepting his fathers death. He is at a very hard time in his life becoming a preteen. He is acting out his feelings because he does not understand them. He is probably very desperate for a male in his life and is having a hard time understanding his father can not be the one. He probably is hurt inside and blames himself for it.
I suggest get him to a good therapist and let him open up. He sounds like he is very angry inside. Sounds like he just needs help in coping

SOUNDS LIKE HE'S EMO.
I DONT KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU EXCEPT THAT HE NEEDS HIS FRIENDS TO HELP HIM WITH THIS. MAY BE A CLOSE FRIEND THATS A GIRL, THAT HE WILL LISTEN TO. IT CAN BE A GUY TOO I GUESS, BUT I RECOMMEND A GIRL.
GIRLS ARE MORE UNDERSTANDING, AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

Sounds like he could be depressed or bi-polar, take him in to be examined.
