Marie Antoinette's biggest downfall is that during a period of starvation and economic upheaval she continued spend money on elaborate hairdo's and parties. The starving French populace got sick of this and made her a symbol for everything that was wrong with the French monarchy.

Now, you know, a government is supposed to tax people, then spend or redistribute the wealth in ways that will benefit the people. King Louis XVI (and some of his predecessors) were more interested in living grandly than in improving living conditions for the taxed. The people eventually tired of it, and a good proportion of the nobility of France at the time got their heads chopped off in the bloody French revolution.
