Well, what the previous poster said about the ice caps on Mars melting was partially correct. However, it's unfair to compare the ice caps on Earth and Mars when their atmospheres are so fundamentally different. Mars' atmosphere consists of approximately 95% CO2. The south polar ice cap on Mars is made almost completely out of CO2, making it essentially dry ice. It has a melting cycle that mimics the four seasons, similar to ours. Interestingly enough, the northern ice cap is not melting at all. This is completely normal for Mars and does not mean we are not contributing to the melting of our polar ice caps. In fact, the most alarming thing is not that our ice caps are melting, but the magnitude in which it is occuring.

To address the question, I think probably the biggest thing we can all do is rally around the idea of increased public transportation. Anyone who has been overseas and used another country's public transportation knows how effective and affordable it can be. There is absolutely no excuse for everyone to own a car in our society when we have a government that is plenty organized enough to provide good public transportation. All of the big cities use it to some extent, and that is a good start. However, we need to start making a gradual transition away from masses of individual drivers. This is probably one of the things we have the most control over when it comes to reducing greenhouse gases and slowing down global warming.

It cannot be stopped, because you cannot stop the coming intrusion and collision with the star system Sirius, the electromagnetic stellar culprit that is causing the magma agitation within the core of the earth which is heating the oceans and changing the climate. Humans, industry, pollution, fuel emissions, etc. have utterly nothing to do with global warming. Scientists and environmentalists have completely misdiagnosed the problem. Instead, our Solar System is on a collision course with the Sirius Binary Stellar System; it will be an extinction level event. Kiss you’re a*s good-bye.

Global Warming - Kids Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome kids! The fact that you are already here shows that you know how serious the issue of global warming is to our futures. Here is some basic information on what global warming means, and how you can help to stop the process. Thanks for visiting with us!

Do scientists agree about global warming?

Scientists who study the climate are still arguing about how fast the earth is warming and how much it will warm, but they do agree that the earth is warming and that it will keep warming if we don’t do anything about it.

What is causing global warming?

Scientists agree that the burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal cause greenhouse gases to escape into the air and that these gases are causing most of the warming. Another cause is deforestation (cutting down trees). Trees soak up carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases, from the air.

What is the difference between "global warming" and "climate change?"

"Global warming" refers to the increase of the Earth's average surface temperature, due to a build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. "Climate change" is a broader term that refers to long-term changes in climate, including average temperature and precipitation.

What will happen if global warming continues?

There are already some changes happening because of global warming. Sea level is rising and some animals are already moving to new homes. It’s already too late to stop global warming completely.

If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some kinds of plants and animals that become extinct (disappear completely) because they can’t move to new homes. There may be more storms and floods. Sea level may rise so much that people have to move away from the coasts. Some areas may become too dry for farming.

What is being done about global warming?

Global warming is a very difficult problem to fix. People are having a hard time agreeing on what to do about it. For example, everyone agrees that wasting energy is a bad thing to do. But some people think that the federal government should make laws about it, while other people think it should be up to each person or business to decide what to do.

Many states and businesses in the United States are not waiting until the federal government decides what to do. They have already started working on the problem.

What can I do about global warming?

You don’t have to wait until you are grown to do something about global warming. Scientists agree that the burning of fossil fuels is causing global warming. Since these fuels are burned for energy, and everyone uses energy, everyone can help stop global warming just by using less energy.

Think about the things you do each day that use energy. The lights in your house use electricity. The TV and computer use electricity. The washing machine, dishwasher and dryer all use gas or electricity. Every time you ride in your car, it uses gasoline.

There are some very simple things that everyone can do to help stop global warming:

· Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Use fluorescent bulbs in your room.

· Turn off your computer or the TV when you’re not using it. Unplug chargers when not in use.

· Wait until you have a lot of clothes to wash before using the washing machine. Don’t use the machine for one item just because it’s your favorite shirt.

· Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.

· Close the blinds on a hot day if the sun is shining in. Dress more lightly instead of asking for the air conditioning to be turned up, or use a fan.

· Dress more warmly when it’s cold, instead of asking for the heat to be turned up.

· Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on your AC and furnace clean.

· Walk short distances instead of asking for a ride in a car.

· Plant a tree.

· Learn more about global warming so you can talk to people about it. See: Could it really happen? or Global Warming Basics.

Over the past 25 years, the energy industry has designed a host of alternative technologies, from solar panels and windmills, to hydroelectricity and advanced biofuels. In turn, the sector has produced a number of innovations, including efficient appliances, long-life lighting, elaborate conservation programs and progressive international agreements for energy use. Yet, for all of this effort, global consumption of coal now exceeds 400 million more tons per year than when energy awareness became a priority a quarter century ago.

The results have been remarkable and costly. We now know that the continued burning of fossil fuels has driven world wide climate change, adversely affecting our biosphere in ways we had previously only imagined. To complicate matters, our demand for energy is progressively escalating, with global requirements forecast to more than double over the next 25 to 30 years.

Despite all that, we also know global warming is not something that we have 100% control over.

The geological record of the earth's temperature is very clear - for millions of years the earth has been going through many cycles of warming and cooling. In general, the Earth has been warming up since the end of the Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago) due to complex influences that we don't completely understand, but they include the angle of the earth's rotational axis to the sun, the average distance to the sun, reflectance of the earth's surface, and atmospheric conditions including CO2 and dust.

Even if there were no humans on Earth, and all the CO2 and pollution we are creating were removed from our ecosystem, the earth would gradually become warmer without any human influence. Eventually, for reasons unknown, the Earth would eventually begin a cooling cycle again - the period of each cycle is irregular but they seem to last about 100,000 years.

So the best we can hope for is to help slow the RATE of global warming. I think the evidence is undeniable - the rate of global warming is unprecedented, due to the impact of 6 billion people in a very industrial society.

One of the contributors (and certainly the one we humans are responsible for) is the amount of C02 in the atmoshere. Fortunately, the Earth has a natural buffer that keeps CO2 levels in check - vegetation. As the CO2 levels increase, chloropyll-based green plants increase their rate of photosynthesis which converts CO2 to to O2 and fixes the carbon in the plant structure. Also, forest fires have been a significant source of CO2 in the atmosphere for thousands of years. As CO2 levels increase and 02 levels decrease, forest fires will not burn as efficiently, meaning that nature already has ways of keeping atmospheric CO2 and O2 levels in balance.

But our consumption of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) and even wood and peat, means that we are producing CO2 faster than nature can recover. On top of that, everything humans do creates heat and that needs to be dissipated in the earth's atmosphere.

With the technology we have today, probably the single most reasonable thing we can do to prevent the rate of global warming increasing so quickly is to replace all of our fossil fuel-powered electrical generating plants with nuclear plants.

The biggest opposition to nuclear plants seems to be the question of radioactive waste. Now here's a fact: a coal fired power plant (most of the world's electricity is produced from coal, esp. in China, Australia, and USA) produces more radiation than a nuclear power plant. The evidence is clear - nuclear is the only greenhouse gas-free energy source that produces large amounts of electricity with today's technology. While no energy source is perfect, nuclear is the the safest of any industry. Fortunately, we already have 440 nuclear reactors producing electricity around the world, and another 100 are being built or are in the planning stages. More are needed to replace every coal-burning plant, which collectively add more CO2 to the atmosphere than any other source. There is no such thing as "clean burning technology" for coal, CO2 is a fundamental product of combustion that can not be reduced.

Of course the only way to completely eliminate our impact on the Earth's temperature is stop using all forms of energy, as every one of them creates heat and other side effects.

Use less electricity.
Use public transportation.
Most important, get political. Get large scale emitters to internalize those externalities. Yes, it will cost us a lot now, but if those costs are internalized to the producers they will raise prices to the consumers of the product: you play, you pay.
If not, in 20-40 years... everybody pays and dearly.

Peace

the flip answer is to turn down the sun. it is also the right answer, since the sun is a cyclical star and we are in the middle of a period of rising energy output from the sun.
for your friends who reject this answer and insist that people are doing this ask them why the martian icecaps are melting.
