It would help for us to know what the prevailing climate is, in your location (or State). In Florida, West is definitely NOT the way to aim anything but the side of a garage. The heat coming in the front of a home from the West is really intense most of the year. Of course East is pleasant for mornings in the kitchen and for breakfast, but most of us don't spend that much time at home in the mornings anyway. North and South for the front and back is good. In the Winter the South side does get a lot of sun and is pleasant for kitchens and family rooms. Good Luck...

A non-feng Shui traditional answer is:
breakfast nook or kitchen to the east - sunrise
Living room and/or Dining room to the west sunset
The best spot for comfy sleeping is North east as the setting sun in the summer won't heat it up too much
But it also depends on the view. I live in Oregon, growing up on Mount tabor, my room faced Mt Hood and I had the north east set up for my room and always had a cool breeze

if you have the good fortune to build it yourself without restriction..place the four corners of the house...to the four directions on the compass. east, west, south and north. this will cut the wind when it is coming directly. there will be less wind blowing directly at windows and doors and wailing down the porches. as for the front or the back of the house...doesn't really matter.

Kitchen/dining room windows facing East for early morning sun. Master bedroom windows facing North or West for keeping the room cooler/darker during summer. Family/living room windows facing South for extended daylight during the summer months and warmth during the winter months.

In northen climates you want the living/dining room facing southwest and the bedroom facing northeast. In southern climates the opposite is best.
This way you'll get a warmer living room with a view of the sunset and a bedroom with a view of the sunrise,or you get a cooler living room with a view of the sunset and a bedroom with the view of the sunrise.

I don't think it really matters which way you place it. I know that it matters that you make sure that it is facing North to South, East to West. My husband and I place our beds North and south, our heads to the North and our feet to the south. From what I have heard it is best to do it that way because of the gravity pull. I guess you can decide on that. Good Luck!

a rule of thumb down south is to have a north facing home and would presume the opposite to apply in the northern hemisphere

Any darn way you please for best view or lot alignment. After all it is 'your' house.
Be certain to maximum window and lite exposure on the south side of your home.
Sunligt during the winter doldroms is always nice. No matter what climate you live in.
