We stand on the same cusp the Romans stood on when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon and marched on Rome. What had been an imperfect Democracy, became less perfect as corruption weakened it over many years, leading eventually to Civil War.
Even then it might have been saved had Caesar had the honor of George Washington, and lived to set things right. No one will ever know because he was killed and those who came after, had neither the honor, or eventually even the power to make things right.
Now we stand, Bill of Rights in tatters, but not yet beyond redemption. Democracy also, not beyond the ability to overthrow Tyrants, as I for one was most surprised to see happen, but still sick and weak, and saved only by reaction to the outing of extraordinary displays of corruption that overwhelmed careful subversion, but left in place to work again as it has for three of the last four elections.
We have been at that cusp before, in 1934 America stood on a knife edge, to join the Conquerors of the World or it's defenders. A Mississippi Flood and a diverse Press that reported it, put FDR in office, and Democracy and Freedom prevailed, but even then just barely and at grievous cost.
Now the Gang Of Pirates is back, and like Imperial Rome that they see as their Ideal, are trying to create a power structure that cannot be overthrown, that a few thousand will enjoy unbelievable wealth, and unbelievable billions suffer wretched existence, and cruel death.
Not a part of their heartless plan, is that the earth itself is breaking under their greed, and like the Vikings of Greenland drive themselves to extinction with their own stupid Ideology
The Civilization and Species can be saved, but it will be dicey for quite a while. Already in the past 50 years 90% of large food fish are gone, 97% of elkhorn coral in Florida is gone 75% of California kelp forests are gone, 150 Dead zones (where no sealife can live ) from none 50 years ago. Much of the plankton that is the base of the food chain, and food for all sizes of critters from barnacles to whales, is now filled with plastic particles that poison, or just kill with sheer bulk of indigestability. Some formerly rare algae have their own toxins, some neurotoxic that move up the food chain, to include people.
The country is also being deserted, across the world, people are deserting the country for the city, in some cases Agribusiness has poisoned the economy for small farmers, in others the very exodus feeds on itself. Already more people world wide live in cities than country for the first time ever.
The loss of cheap oil may change that when it hits which will be before 50 years
