My husband and I made a few promises to each other, but cannot think of a reasonable consequence, if either of us broke our promise. It must be painful enough that it would deter us from breaking them but reasonable enough that the punishment fits the crime. Our promise are simple ones but very important at the same time. (i.e. no lies, etc.). We came up with paying a fine to a "community chest" that would go to our kids savings at the end of the year. Other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the problem with the money deal is that all of the money really belongs to the both of you but the slave for a week idea that angel mentioned might be a diamond in the rough. you could also go with specific things of service like a certain number of back massages. breakfasts in bed, etc. this needs to kind of just be a fun thing to keep things lite because the reality is nobody is perfect and when your spouse fails (and we all do) a sincere apology that is then accepted by the other should be the end of it. but that doesn't mean you can't have a system like you propose just for fun!

Do you think for a moment that if you could not honor a simple promise, that you would feel inclined to honor the consequences of a broken promise? You are kidding yourselves!

Instead of the money going to your kids, how about it going to something nice for you two...a vacation to an island, massages, dinner, a nice weekend getaway.....the kids will always have a savings. Sometimes you have to be selfish and enjoy each other again.
