The 3-4 defense was created by Sooners coach Bud Wilkinson, around 1947. Also called the Oklahoma defense back then.
For jeffsgirl: Stram did use the 3-4 in the 60s, but he took a page from Bud. And the 80s Bears used the 46 defense, not the 3-4. Buddy Ryan is a 4 man D-line coach. He also coached the Vikings purple people eaters. And sorry but "Mike" was used for MLB long before Singletary played.
ndmagicman: The 80s Bears used a front 4 and 3 LBs. They brought up a safety to defend the run, putting 8 men in the box. That isn't a 3-4. Buddy coined it as the 46. A 3-4 uses a front 3 with 4 LBs.

The 3-4 has been around for many years but it was really Buddy Ryan with the Bears of the mid 80s that seemed to perfect it and use it almost exclusively. He combined the 3-4 with zone blitzes and a variety of looks.

Hank Stram used it some in his day's at K.C. Buddy Ryan who coached DA Bear's defense when they won the Super Bowl perfected it. Thanks to Chicago's other Mike, Mike Singletary who helped him dominate with it. "The Mike" is now the term used for middle line backer position on most teams. A total complement to anyone that has ever played it. Butkus was awesome, but "The Mike" was the man that took it to the next level.
