Why are they on the island?

I think the bears are the realistic manifestation of the young boy, Walt's, imagination or thought process, because if you recall in the first year they show a cartoon magazine that Walt was given I think when on the plane & he continued to read this magazine once they crashed. The camera focused specifically on the magazine at one point showing polar bears in cartoon form. This applies to every character on the show who's ever had a "figment of their imagination" materialize in real form on the island. Think about it? What's causing it is anyones guess as that is the writers finale for the show once it ends.

It has something to do with the zoology hatch, I'd say. Remember that film with the Asian guy who outlined all the different areas that the foundation funds? I believe that each area corresponds to a hatch on the island.

I think the island is some kind of research facility...That would explain the cages outside that they kept Sawyer and Kate in.

We found that the room where Jack was kept was underwater and that they were studying dolphins.
