The first thing you should be spending money on is upgrading to XP.

Don't spend money on a 98 machine - it's just throwing money away.

If your machine can't handle XP start saving and buy a Vista machine when they are out in early 2007.

You really need to upgrade the OS, but to answer your question newer cards won't work in Win98. You need to find a PCI video card. For Nvidia i would recommend the GeForce 6 series video card. You don't need any software in order to play 3D games on win98 just make sure you have at least 256 mb or Ram, a fast cpu (Pentium 3 or 4), fast hard drive, fast cd/dvd-rom drive and a good video card like the GeForce 6xxx.

Listen to Jan, Nightwheel, jt114881, and Ted B.
If you are going to upgrade; make sure you get a new computer with 64 bit processer. Don't settle for anything less then WinXP Pro if you want games to run smoothly.

While your choice in prices, out there, will drop around tax time, because the stores are going to want to unload their excess stock to meet the 15th deadline.

Unless you want to build your own computer from scratch that is... Still,,,
