Don't waste time and bucks. Go to a pro. Like Geek Squad at Best Buy. Another place to try is Computer Renaissance (CR) stores; CR is scattered all around many major metropolitan areas. CompUSA may be able to help. But I used Computer Renaissance successfully for the very same need.

Ask them to see if any data can be recovered. Note that doing this will cost something, but pros do this stuff all the time. Sometimes the media can be read, but the drive may be too damaged for repair. So be prepared for the need to restore your data onto a new hard disc drive.

When all else fails there are companies out there that can attempt to recover whatever is on your hard drive. They cost some money and may not be able to recover everything that was on it. Your best bet is to back up everything on a regular basis.

You can buy 30-100$ software that will do it. Or if it is important enough you can send it to a lab, but it can be very costly (a few thousand dollars). You might want to call a professional to have it done for you, if you don't know the technology.
