Some books have the words 'First Edition' printed in them. However, other books do not have the words 'first edition' printed in them and also do not list a copywrite date. For example, on Ebay, there are several Black Beauty books for sale which the sellers all say they think are first editions. However, the books all look different so they can't all be first editions. Please help.

I believe it always says first edition if it is a first edition

What a great question! And there is no real answer, because the industry does not have a uniform way to state first edition. Different publishers do different things - some print first edition, as you said; some have number lines that show which printing the book is (a full number line most often means first printing) - there's even a website that lists how to identify Stephen King first editions (board colors, number of pages, years, number lines, price, etc). Try the websites below for a bit more info. I have a beautiful copy of Stephen King's Carrie in hardback - if it were only a first edition rather than a book club edition. Ah well...

Good luck! It's like a treasure hunt.

If something is marked 'e book club' or 'specific version' or perhaps 'unique First version' then it is not first version. there isn't any authentic way of figuring out a known version if there isn't any date, how does it look, somewhat, did the kind of the e book replace? Does something look suspicious?

This is something I'm interested in knowing also. I'll do some research and hopefully find the answer.
My book is copyright, but first edition is not listed. "It's not a dream" is my first book see my website blessedandfavored.com and click on Bridget Merriwether.
