Ah, the boomerang. It's actually called the gale boomerang. This item is in the forest temple.
Can't remember which room it's in but you need to win a small fight to get it. It's a fight with a possessed monkey, who uses the boomerang against you. Once he's thrown the boomerang, roll into the platform he's standing on. The platform will shake and he'll hesitate. As a result, he will be hit in the face by his own boomerang. This will knock him off the platform, allowing you to go and slash him up. Just keep repeating this process until the monkey is freed from his possession. You'll get the gale boomerang as your reward.

In the very first dungeon, the Forest Temple. The game is pretty linear during that part, you should find it in no time.
