Oh, how does any rumor get started. Someone starts to gossip about so-and-so and it gets passed around, and you remember that long ago game called "telephone" that we've all played as kids. That's my theory.

Well, I shared an absolute fact in secret, but then my sister's husband's first cousin (twice removed)'s best friend's ex-girlfriend's grandmother's cat totally bent it into the rumor you heard.
