The second crusade was led by king Louis VII of France, who traveled there with his queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. This was a mission to reinforce the lands conquered in the first crusade, namely the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Principality of Antioch.

The third crusade was not led by anyone but the principal persons were emperor Frederick (I) Barbarossa of Germany, Richard (I) "The Lion Heart," of England, and Philip Augustus of France. Jerusalem had been reconquered by the saracens, so the mission was to re-re-conquer Jerusalem.

The fourth crusade was derailed by the siege and conquest of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine (Greek) empire in 1204. The crusaders had planned to sail with a Venetian fleet, but could not come up with the money to pay the Venetians to carry them to the Holy Land. The Venetians offered to forgive the debt if the crusaders would recapture the city of Zara on the Adriatic coast from the Hungarians for them. While the crusaders were at Zara, Alexius Angelos, nephew of the deposed and blinded emperor Isaac Angelos, offered them money from the imperial treasury and a forced unification of the Greek Orthodox church with the Roman Catholic church under the supremacy of the Pope. The result was the Latin Empire of Romania, which lasted until 1261, and which lasted in Greece until the 1400's.

Well there were never really an actual LEADER of any crusade as we think of a leader today. It was a coalition (a shaky coalition at times) headed roughly by the Pope. But the individual Kings and Lords who travelled with their soldiers to the Holy Lands in hope of land and power were of course also leaders of a sort. This may be one of the reasons why most of the crusades were complete catastrophes; because the individual leaders couldn't agree and schemed against each other.

The cause of each Crusade is difficult to find; the first Crusade began with a letter fom the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, Alexius, requesting assistance from the Pope because some Turkish gangs were attacking his borders. The new Pope (whose name escapes me at the present time) did not have the full support of the European Kings and Lords and he needed a cause to raly them to him. So he "made up" a story of hordes of pillaging Saracens and Turks attacking Europe (when the real threat was no where that big) and managed to assemble a strong army by promising Entrance to Heaven and redemption to those who "took to the cross" and went to fight for Christianity. The later Crusades also had motives other than Christian piety: Land was scarce in Europe and a lot wars had been fought over territory so it was nearly a blessing to the Lords of Europe to see that so much land in the Holy Land was up for grabs! And they could even get the Popes blessing in taking it for themselves by fighting the Muslims who lived there. In Denmark for instance, the Crusades were used to "christen" Estonia (by slaughtering the population) thereby seccuring Danish interests in the Baltic Region and gaining the Danish King Valdemar his nickname "Sejr" (meaning 'Victory' in Danish)

I hope these answers helped!
