Have you seen the animated version of Charlotte's Web? They have that song (sung by Debbie Reynolds), "How very special are we to have on our family tree - Mother Earth and Father Time."
I think you're view of what "nature" and "mother" means is a little off - no offense.
Nature really isn't lifeless and hostile, and mothers are more nurturing than "creator".
I suppose they say "Mother Nature" because everything living comes from Nature, and living creatures also come from their mother.

One thing nature is not is lifeless. Hostile at times, but never lifeless. You can just stand outside and see nature doing it's thing. Nature sustains life for so many things and gives life and nutrition to many other things.
Sounds like a mother to me...

That's one way to look at it. Here is another. Nature is what earth gives birth to, so to speak. Nature is life of the earth. It is ever rebuilding, giving new life to earth every day, like a mother.

As a lover of nature...I have always used the term "mother nature"....that's how it is.....the Earth, which IS our mother....gives us life, abundance.....yes, nature is hostile and cruel sometimes, but then again, isn't everything???....I love my "mother nature"...and I am deep rooted in her also....as a "natural witch" what else is there TO believe in.....

I believe it originated from the May Queen. The Goddess of Spring. She brings life back to the land after winter has left. With Spring, comes change, hope & life.

Mother - I think of someone loving, nuturing and always there when you need them.
Nature- I think of living things like plants, animals and even weather--a huge category.
