If you're looking into a musical theatre career, I'd suggest test driving your talents in Philadelphia. There are many theatres (good professional ones, too) there, auditions all the time for musicals and straight plays, LOADS of acting classes at almost every theatre, it's close to NYC (about 2 1/2 hours to drive), and it's cheaper than NYC too. If things work out there, then try auditioning for Broadway or what have you.

New York is the way to go, as far as I'm concerned. I've been here for a long time and I find that people and auditions are much more accessible here than anywhere else. There are classes of all sorts for acting (I teach one myself) and the acting community is very big and in the main very supportive of each other.
