Because the children allow it.

The reason that they think this is because the adult child has allowed for them to overstep their boundaries, so what needs to happen is you and your husband/wife need to talk about this and think out a plan that shows the inlaws that there is a marriage here and that you two need time alone, not with them all the time, or for them to keep their opinions to themselves on financial, domestic, or where children are involved. The husband/wife that has the blood relation with the mother in law needs to be the one to talk to them about this problem, and let the mother know that its ok to cut the unbilical cord already, do not under any circumstances let the son/daughter in law be the one to voice their opinions as it could backfire and they will start a feud over this, if it is the spouse's fault that they think their mothers actions are no big deal, then you will need to let them know that it is affecting the marriage and let them know that its alot easier to lose a spouse than it is a parent, as they will always be there no matter what. Good luck I also suggest to pay a visit to this website www.ihatemyinlaws.com they all have great stories to tell that apply to your situation. again good luck

Not all mother's in law think that way. I don't. The way I feel is: My adult children married for better or worse. Let them handle the problems. I had to learn to deal with mine. I am here IF they need me, but no way do I want to be involved in their lives to where I have to "control" them! I don't all ways agree with the things they decide, but it is their life and their business...NOT MINE!

Because their married children allow them to have control.

I don't believe that all mother's-in-laws are like that. I have been married for 30 yrs and even though we have had many ups and downs my mother-in-law never interferes. Nor does my mum with my husband. I guess they just figure we are both adults and will work out our own business eventually. I honestly can't say that l have any complaints with mine, she is great.

I must be lucky because I have a pretty good relationship with my husband's mom. She doesn't have "control" over him. he would have told her to knock it off if she tried. Yet if she needs something he rarely says no. for that matter she is pretty self sufficient and rarely asks for anything but advice so we are happy to help her out.

Some still think that, but most do not make that mistake.
