You can't just rename them, you have to convert them.
If you're using Windows XP, then you don't really need the third party zip applications, as XP has its own zipping application.
In Explorer, just right click the .avi file (or any file) and select *Send To* and click *Compressed (zipped) Folder* - Windows will create the zip file in the same folder.
It sounds like you want to email the file. Windows may not compress it by a lot, so you may want to look at other zip applications, like winrar, which will break down the file in to manageable chunks, which can be joined together when unzipped.

You can't change the file extension--not really true but i won't get into that. You, however can use a compression software like WinZip or WinRar to compress the avi file to a zip or rar file. Decompress it to get the avi file back.

*.avi is a movie format. *.zip is a zipped file format. YOu cannot simply change the extension of these files.
If you have a *.zip file you need Winzip in order to 'un-zip' (inflate) them.
Unfortunately I thin the newer versions of winzip require payment. You need to get an older version. If you get stuck, let me know I will send you the version I have. But I'd have to send it to you with a different extension because it might be recognized by your antivirus software.
Lemme know.

You can use 7zip instead of Winzip also. It's completely free.

Otherwise I'd recommend the Compressed/Zipped folder option that other people have mentioned. Just create a new one and then copy your avi file into that folder. The compressed/zipped folder should have an icon that looks like a folder with a zipper on it.

If you're in XP, go to File>New>Compresed (zipped) Folder. Then place the .avi file inside. If in a different OS use a program like winzip.
