I work as a care and support worker looking after adults with learning problems, out in the community in there own homes with my local council.
Ive been doing this for 2years now, the thing is im coming down for the flu, my fiancee has it, theres about 5 members of staff that are off with it just now, i went into work today with a struggle, but i made it.
Ive been told that im working with a client that i can't really work with, this client is the only one that i have a problem with, don't get me wrong i have done my fair share of shifts.
He is very hard work and i am doing a full shift, i don't know wether i will be able to cope a full day as im not great.
Whats you're views?

I agree with John S.
But may I add that you people do a wonderful job.
I have carers helping my elderly parents, and almost all of them are off sick, and I would like to think they are as genuine as you.
As much as you care for others, you must look after yourself.
Your health must at times take priority over those you care for.
This may seem hard, but better you take a couple of days off to get better, so you can get back to work and give 100% attention to those you care for, rather than trying to keep going for weeks and only be able to give 50%.
This is only my opinion, but I'm sure others will agree.
May I wish you well, and Happy New Year.

If you're ill, then you can't. If you're on the verge of becoming ill, then the choice is harder. You have to weigh up between not going in and probably feeling guilty for a day or two or deciding that it's best not to infect anyone else - that always makes me feel better!
However if you're not ill in bed, and you're not infectious, then you ought to just grin and bear it, putting up with the client you can't stand - we all have to do things like that - but we all also pull sickys and pretend an illness is worse than it is to get out of things. So don't feel too guilty.
Would you lose pay if you didn't go in? If not, I'd say spend a day in bed watching your favourite movies. After all, you are coming down with something, so by keeping yourself in bed you'll be avoiding the worst that you'd get if completely run down and also stopping infecting anyone else, including the guy you don't like!
Take a day off and try and ignore your conscience. Honestly, I find that the conscience tends to shut up after half a pint of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food.
:D

Are the people you work with at risk of catching the flu?
I had flu a few weeks back and i work with a lot of young kids at church, i also work with the youth club, i decided that although i was well enough to potter round the house i was still too icky to go to work. It after all is your decision because it may look like you are just skivving off because you've got this pain up the butt to deal with lol
I would reccomend that if they are at risk and you do have it that you dont go to work.

If you feel worse in the morning dont go - nothing's worth more than your health. If you still go in and feeling rubbish dealing with a difficult person will just make you feel even worse. If you work for an agency then they'll (coordinators, admin etc) will just have to get off their backsides and chip in. And dont let them use the guilt trip on you either. Get well soon anyway.

If you are ill its not fair on you to put yourself through it,and its not fair on the client. Take the day off, snuggle up with a hot water bottle and a hot drink and have a well earned rest. I hope you feel better soon

Try to stay home if you have flu. You may be so weak that you might be not able to make through the whole day. Also you don't wanna maybe everyone else sick!

I think the fact that youve bothered to ask means youll feel guilty if you dont. Give it a go, it probably wont be as bad as you think and cut it short if you feel bad.
If you are heavy with flu dont force yourself to go as I did once and crashed the car. Not good.

If you have the flu you will not be able to get out of bed so the decision will be made for you

If you have the flu or any other type of virus, you shouldn't go anywhere at all. Aside from the fact that you need rest, don't spread the virus to anyone, anywhere, anytime...period!
