The land that is now the Czech Republic was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire until October 28, 1918 when it became the country of Czechoslovakia. It remained as such through communist rule.

A week after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, the Velvet Revolution brought an end to communism. Václav Havel, former dissident, was elected president during the country's first democratic elections in January 1990.

On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into two independent countries, Czech Republic and Slovakia, and Havel was elected the first president of the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and was approved to become a member of the European Union in 2002. On May 1, 2004 the Czech Republic joined the EU along with 10 other nations.

The first king of the Czechs was Wenceslaus 1st in the year 1230.. Over the centuries, the kingdom grew and retreated... became part of the Moravian and Polish empire., with Austria taking a part, the Czechs invented the word Defenestration. Unfortunately, The Czechs were under the fist of Austria for 300 years. At the end, the first world war created the repoblic of Czechoslovakia in 1918. the first president was Garique Masaryk.

In 1939, the Nazi Germans first took over the Czech highlands, then the rest of the country. The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia lasted as long as the Third Reich.

In 1948 when the Commies took over, my family & I had 2 escape. My Father, the general manager of the Czechoslovakian Airlines voted with the USA and against the USSR. ~~~ back to history... Czechoslovakia was under Communist fist until the end of the Communist regime. Now, the Government is having a battle of life between the conservative ODS party and socialist CSSD party.
