Don't be confused by a snail coming out of its shell to find a new one and calling it giving birth. (Although seeing a snail come out of its shell is rare too.) However if you in fact did see a snail give birth that is VERY rare and would be worth seeing.

(I also thought snails laid small eggs like salmon.)

The snail that is in my daughters tank laid eggs in a big 'gob' that was above the water line. And from there...we tool out the 'gob' and put it in a container that was tilted slightly with a wee bit of water in it..but tilted enough so that the water was as far away from the 'gob' as it was in the tank.
And...these little snails started hatching. From the looks of the size of the 'gob' and the size of the live babies...a rough estimate would be ...that there were hundreds of them little buggers!
She kept one healthy looking one and put it in a tank with her 2 goldfish. And it is doing just fine. It's been about a month now and all is healthy and happy.
I've never heard of snails giving live birth..but I can almost bet that somewhere in the world it does happen.
Oh by the way.......we terminated the rest of the embryos.

Not rare at all. Snails are notorious for overpopulating tanks extremely fast. However most snails lay eggs. There are a few livebearers though... the trapdoor snail is one of them.
