What is the difference between a window motor and a window regulator.?

I am trying to purchase a window motor for my pontiac grand am online. So pictures look like a piece of plastice that i can hold in my hand. The other picture that keeps coming up is this thing that looks like some thin rope that has been made to form into an X. I would like to know what it is that I'm looking at. If you can help ... thanks in advance.

window regulator is the x thing and a window motor has a motor on 1 side of it and a gear on the other,which goes together with the gear on the regulator
