...in contrast with other mediums of music. I suspect there are obvious factors such as the athmosphere of a crowd, or an inevitably unique rendition of a song, but the question remains.

i personally love the unknowable nature of a live concert. what i mean by this is that you have no idea what song you're going to hear next or even what it's going to sound like most times. the absolute best concerts i've been to are the ones where the band pulls out some random cover and completely nails it. best examples of this are Pearl Jam and the Dave Matthews Band.

Good question, interested in seeing the other answers...

There is nothing like being there and the atmosphere is obvious but it's a huge thing. It gives me goosebumps. It's proof that these people really have talent too. Paris Hilton sounds okay on a cd (debatably) but would you see her in concert? No, cos you know she has no talent. Stage presence and the entertainment/ crowd involvement factor is something you have to be there to experience too. Singing along with thousands of others to your favourite songs is a powerful experience. Being in the presence of the people that you have listened to and adore is exciting. It's very uplifting all round.

I go for the light show. Also you never know if a cover song will bring out the original artist. or they just might have a guest show up out of nowhere.

Music can sell itself, but it is the artist's presence that makes him popular.

It's the novelty of seeing the image of that special person or group that we envy and admire. It's about celebrity, and about connecting with the artist.
