I have played it in my family for years and love it. We usually refer to it simply as 'Nap'. I wondered if anyone else out there played it and also if anyone knew anything about it's origin. Presumably French but does anyone know more?

It's British, according to Wikipedia, although it doesn't explain the origin of the game.

I used to spend hours playing cards with my grandma - canasta, Newmarket, nap, rummy, anything really!

EDIT: OK, there is a Japanese game also called Napoleon.

I played it with my brother and beat him, he got so angry he threw the cards at me and I lost an eye in the process, how ironic is that!!

No thanks. Anything that'll land you on St. Helena is something I want to stay away from.
