So if the prompt says "approximately" 250 words, and I have 298 words in the word count, would that be okay or would that undermine my essay? Deleting a sentence would lose details that are concluded in the conclusion paragraph...so I really wish not to delete anything. So would it weaken the essay if I had 48 more words than the requirement?

its totally fine. My essay was supposed to be 500 words...i wrote 650.
I think they just set that limit as an approximation, so you know how much they are looking for.
298 is nothing, dont worry about it.
my guidance counsellor says to go with their limit, but if you can't cut out things without changing the meaning, then just leave it.
i think you are fine.

Too many. Approximately, when it comes to 250 word paragraphs, by general rule of thumb shouldn't exceed a MAXIMUM of 15-20 words either way.
Personally, I think that it displays a lack of concise writing style, which is one of the things that the school is looking for in asking you for this specific length. They know you can't say much, so you have to say a little really well. That's why high end schools, such as Harvard Law, ask for a 250 word essay. Trim the fat, even if you think it detracts.
