I know Hal Leonard's work, and I know that he makes an easy transition from the very basic to the serious nuts and bolts. My added advice would be to keep him going with that, but to search for sheet music from more contemporary songs that he likes, and that would spark his interest. Look into a popular band called Cake, for instance.

I took Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 for trumpet as a college freshman, lol, but I could still play regular songs. I imagine that that book you linked to wouldn't be too above his level. Trumpet really isn't as hard as I thought it would be, but keep in mind :How well does he read treble clef? The only thing that made reading trumpet music easy was that I've played violin for 9 years. If he can play without difficulty, then he can start looking at more stuff. I could play "Oh Canada" in only 15 lessons lol
