To my knowledge, there is no incontrovertible evidence of an afterlife. Throughout history, however, most cultures have proselytized the concept of a person, after death, moving into another dimension. Some do not isolate the "afterlife" to humans; but, include all living organisms.
Should there be an afterlife, it is conceivable there is a before life state. Perhaps that state could explain De ja vu.

Barbara Walters just did a two hour special on "Heaven, does it exsist? How do we get there?" Most spiritual people (those who believe in a higher power) believe there is a peaceful after life. Many believe when a person dies and goes to heaven, they are reunited with deceased loved ones. Those non-believers say it is all over when a person dies. Just plain nothingness. Basically, if a person believes in a God, they most likely believe in an after life. Many people who experienced a near death situation reported to Barbara Walters that they got a peek at Heaven, the white guiding light, the sense of calm and comfort and no longer fear dying because they believe they 'know' what to expect. In summary, I believe Heaven and after life is in the mind and heart of the believer. They also suggest that those who truly believe, may live better lives on earth. Perhaps 'that' is the harbinger to our after life or, in living a better life, improving the quality of life - capturing a 'piece of heaven on earth.'

It is the hope of mankind that this life is but a journey from a place we don't remember to a place we believe, by faith is there.
Without the concept of an after life there isn't really much purpose or meaning to this life.

That is a clever eschatalogical concept. Whether or not it is true is yet to be learned. The concept of the afterlife is as old as Neanderthal man as they would bury their dead, wait for the flesh to rot off, then uncover them and paint them with red ochre to appear as if the bones had blood on them. That is not singular to that culture alone, many other cultures did similar things. Buddhist concepts of afterlife are rebirth after rebirth until you have reached absolute nothingness and then you become a Buddha

It doesn't matter much if it exists or not as we know nothing about it and can't experience or plan for it. This life is the only one that matters it is where we are happy or sad, where we receive our blessings and curses, our punishments and rewards. It is this life that is the most precious gift that we have.

While it might be nice to see our dead relatives or live a life of eternal bliss, without proof, its just fanciful thinking using CAVE MAN logic.
