I work in the pharmaceutical field. I personally think not taking anything is sometimes better. It gives your body a chance to use it's immune system. I would take something to treat the symptoms like a sore throat, congestion, etc. I would only take antibiotics or antivirals if you've been sick for a few days or symptoms dramatically increase. As far as herbal, there is a great product out called Cold-fx and it does have great clinical data and natural stuff is always easier on your body. Also remember a lot of it is mental especially stuff related to colds. Alternative medicine is being more popular since it's less invasive and doesn't always require a prescription from a doctor.

There is no best medicine. The medicine that works for you is the best medicine. Herbal, homeopathic, natural medicines tend to have less offensive reactions to the system when used properly. Drug medicines are know for their side effects.
In my case I prefer using herbs, tentures, extracts, supplements, and occasionaly over the counter medicine for dealing with symptons. When I break bones or need emergency help I go to the doctors. I haven't been to a doctor in 25 years.
Another consideration is what do you believe will help. If you don't believe in natural remedies then they won't work for you. If yoiu believe in doctor cures then you might get some help, if it's not too serious. Can you tell I'm a little bios?
You did leave out a whole area of healing that doesn't involve herbs or drugs, healing of the mind-body-spirit connection.
We won't go there at this point.

The answers you will get to this question are bound to be highly subjective (myself included, being a med student). I, for one, don't think much of herbal medications and claims that some do not have side effects. I am of the belief that all meds have side effects and that those prescribed by Doctors are more thoroughly researched and therefore more trustworthy. As well as this, I do acknowledge that there are some very highly trained people distributing herbal medicines to those who need them, I still however feel that since there is no 'Gold Standard' in their training, that there is a larger risk of harm than benefit from visiting herbal practitioners.

One particular thing that bothers me is the herbal remedy for hypothyroidism and hyperthryoidism. In some cases, it has been known that iodine tablets have been given to people with hyperthyroidism and this can cause the illness to get worse. I have heard of the same being given to hypothroid patients who have underactive thyroids specifically because they have too much iodine. This adds to my preference towards traditional medicine rather than herbal or homeopathy.

a severe problem seems to be helped more quickly with traditional medicines but in the long run herbals are better for us. a combination of both is ideal depending on the problem and as long as the doctor knows what youre taking. some herbals and drugs can cause problems or interfere with each other.

God put cures for everything in the Earth. People are being healed all over the world with natural remedies. Doctors treat sicknesses(which usually cause other problems) Almost all prescriptions medications have side effects and can harm the liver. Pharmacies, doctors, and insurance companies will not make money on natural remedies. They don't offer them, they don't advertise them, and insurance companies won't cover treatment in natural healing clinics. This country is all about money! There are natural healing clinics all over, but you don't see them advertised, or recommended by a doctor. DO SOME RESEARCH!

Chinese Medicine has the longest history- dating back thousands of years before Christ. But to choose just one is being ignorant. Both are good depending on the illness you are suffering.
For example for Gastritis or problems with the digestive system, herbal remedies are much better as they not only treat the stomach but spleen and other organs as well. For Western medicine, you get only relief from using antacids or PPI.

The way I see it is that medicines that are prescribed by doctors are not known to "cure" illnesses. It is only to relieve the symptoms of your illness.
It could be a quick fix to your health problems, but you will have to take medications for the rest of your life.

Herbal medicines are not regulated for the FDA. The FDA doesn't want to cure people, they want to make profit off the drugs they sell, so if the people take the drugs for as long as possible, the doctors and the drug companies, would make residual income off it. It's a business. The business of people buying more and more drugs. Why would the FDA want people to be cured? Because if more and more people are being cured by natural herbal treatments, then the FDA are not making as much money as they want to. The FDA doesn't profit off of healthy people. Hmmmm.....

Herbal remedies are known to remove the symptoms of the illness so the person can be cured. Herbals have been used since the beginning of time. If herbs didn't work to help cure illnesses, then humans would have become extinct a long time ago. Find a doctor who is willing to help you with the herb treatments.
If the doctor doesn't work with you because you choose herbal remedies, then look for another doctor who isn't looking to profit off drugs, but really care about the well being of their patient.
Getting well is 99% patient and 1% doctor. Your job is to think positive and to think about getting well, drink lots of water on a daily basis to flush out toxins from your body, eat foods to eliminate the symptoms of your illness, get Reiki healing treatments from a Reiki practioner to help speed up the recover, take your herbal treatments as directed, find a doctor who doesn't stress you out and cares about their patients well being, etc...
Say this affirmation on a daily basis "Every day and every way, I'm getting better and better." so this affirmation as often as possible on a daily basis and watch your health improve. The mind is very powerful. You feed your mind with positive thoughts and healthy affirmations, you will hardly get sick. Positive follows positive. Negative follows negative. Negative manifests itself as physical, mental, emotion illness.
There have been cases where people with serious health problems like diabetes, cancer, etc.... have overcome it because they fought their illness. They never gave up.
People who don't care anymore will never heal from their illness, always thinks negative, and most of them die.

Our ancestors, the cavemen survived without the benefit of the FDA and patented medicines, so there must be something to be said for herbal medicine. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here today. Modern medicine has also worked miracles.

I think the decision resides in the type of ailment you have and the competence and knowledge of your health care provider. Be cautious in whatever you take.

Hello!!!!

Prescription medications are tested and proven to provide beneficial treatment for indicated illnesses.

If herbal medications were "so damned good", why are there people in countries around the world without prescription drugs that die like crazy from infections and problems that don't exist in the modern civilizations. Simple...herbal drugs are a myth.
