If that's true, why have we killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in a country that did not attack us, when the media was against it the whole time?
Oh, and Alasdair - before you start bragging about the intelligence of Brits, you ought to learn to spell and use punctuation properly.

You're right. Although they don't declare a civil war, they just speculate as to whether or not it is. They form public opinions by creating the story instead of reporting it.
I think the media goes with what the people of this country are saying, though, because they would have to appeal to their demographic. Some parts of the country that may not be true, but most parts it is. It's not a popular war. That's not to say I'm not a supporter of it.

Yes it dose but it's just a pitty that the mider dose not travel down the middle of the road so to speak meaning that they do not give the news the way it should be given. They give the news most of the time as a one sided news. I think and I am shore that the news should be given with only the truth don't mater not who it hurt but tell it like it is. But like you ask is the nation really controlled by the media that's your question and the ans. is YES. It's a tiny few reporters who give the news down the middle and Tim Russel on meet the press on Sunday morning he is perfect with his interviews to any one. he know WHO to ask his questions and he is not afraid to ask hard questions I like the man. Barbara Walters she is not bad as well and not many more I can name at al.>>>.

Most likely in my country the UK it is, and no offence but american's are stupider than British.
Our Prime Minister Tony Blaire if you did some research on him you would be able to see that he's actually a good Prime Ministers, he's done loads of good things and really helped our economy. The media rarely shows this, they try to make him seem as bad as possible. Although I have seen some crtics on tv saying he's good. He is very much disliked though in society because of things like the war in iraq. He might make a few mistakes and the media won't let him forget it and the public is just straight with the media.

They are if they choose to be and most do choose to be because it is easier then actually thinking for themselves.
Tickle get off the liberal bias in the media that was the 60's a liberal slant does not even have a chance to stand in the media anymore. It is now the conservative corporate bias media. Almost libertarian actually.

You are absolutely correct. You don't have to look any further than this very web site and what some people believe to confirm your theory.Example, how bizarre is the notion that in the 2000 election that a huge number of voters in Florida were incapable of sticking a sharp piece of metal through a perforation on a card.Dimpled chads? Baaaa!

This won't get me any "best answer" votes, but for crying out loud, why is it so far fetched to believe that Americans can think for themselves?
I have faith that they know right from wrong, have honor in their day to day dealings, respect for their countrymen, and will go out of their way to be of service to those in need.
You disgrace all that believe in this country by labeling them as sheep. Just because they may not agree with your, or my, idea of America, that is no reason to judge them incapable of being true citizens.
Keep in mind, my fellow American, it might just be that you and/or I, might not have all the answers.

Whoever has the public eye holds power in their hands. That's unavoidable. It is sad that such power should be abused the way it is.
But it is up to Americans to be more than sheep. We can't blame the media for our own complacency.

Nope. The USA is still a democracy. remember: "People get the government they want". Unfotunatley, the American people have given up a lot of control to special interest groups, corporate America, and the political establishment.

No, it is controlled by government who controls the media by what it releases or fails to release! It is sure that some, like Fox News, Rush the addict and the Neocon shrill, Ann Coulter truly doesn't care about the truth or who is in power as long as they are Republican!
