The Sally Melville "Knitting Experience" series are great for their very clear instructions & photographs of techniques.
The first Stitch n B**** book is good because it covers pretty much everything you need to know from casting on to binding off. It also has a good section on how to fix mistakes, which has saved my bacon more than once. =:-O

All of the above listed books are available at Barnes and Noble. They have more than 700 different ones and the selection is daunting. My personal favorites are:
the one I used in my college years to remind me of forgotten techniques here and there - Ilustrated Basic Crochet and Knit by Ondori Publishing Company (this one has great illustrations and also teaches you to read patterns written in symbols). I also like Beginner Basics by Trisha Malcolm from the Vogue Knitting on the Go series and The Knitting Directory by Alison Jenkins.

I learned from "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Knitting and Crocheting." Since then, I have expanded my book collection to both of the Stitch 'N B'tch books, the first of which (not S&B Nation), is really excellent in terms of completeness.
I would DEFINITELY recommend Elizabeth Zimmerman's "Knitting Without Tears." "EZ" as she is affectionately known by the knitting community is a veritable goddess, though Barnes & Noble may have to order the book for you.
Another book my Barnes & Noble has is the Vogue Knitting book, which is very dry but not bad.
In short, if you don't mind cut and dry, Vogue or Complete Idiot's Guide; if you like something to read, Stitch 'N B'tch or Knitting Without Tears.

Although he Melville's books are good be very sure to check the publishers website as they do have SEVERAL ERRORS...
My recomendations are Knitting for Dummies - good basic book. also if you go to a Michael's store they have quick classes on how to Knit. -
another pair of good basic books:
Knitting without Tears: Basic Techniques and Easy-to-Follow Directions for Garments to Fit All Sizes (Knitting without Tears Series), Vol. 1 by Elizabeth Zimmerman//
The Knitting Answer Book: Solutions to Every Problem You'll Ever Face; Answers to Every Question You'll Ever Ask

While you may not find them at B&N, you will probably find them at a Michael's or an A C Moore's, the Paton's Next Steps One, Two and Three are excellent, inexpensive learn to knit booklets. Start with One and work your way up. According to my sources the badly named Stitch 'N ***** books are supposed to be very good too. The Sally Melville series of books is also quite good. These last should be available at B&N.

I artwork at Michaels. i will't advise a particular knitting e book as a results of fact the books selection from shop to shop. bypass to the yarn section at Michaels, it somewhat is on the lower back of the shop, and seek for an difficulty-free ebook mentioned as "i will't have faith i'm Knitting". it somewhat is sparkling, concise and effective. in the adventure that your Michaels would not have it, then yet another Michaels probably will. i became coaching knitting at Michaels till they suspended all training. sturdy luck.

I like the Stitch n B**** books as well.
However, if you'd like to have instructions on video - www.knittinghelp.com is a GREAT site! She gives step by step instructions by video - so you can actually see the steps.
