Depends on who you talk to and your connection to the internet.
Repair shops say leave them on (but they ARE repair shops) What better way to get business? That hard drive is rotating some 10,000 rpm. like a very fast record(and there is a couple of disks atop of each other in the HD)and running continuously. That is mechanical movement and all things that move wear out.
In the old days mid 70's there was no so to speak rom and all the information was forgotten as soon as you shut down the computer. When the computer was restarted, Installation disks had to be reinserted so that the working information was there. Disk after disk. Time consuming. So the machines were left on. Nowadays, it is not a big deal to shut down the machine for it keeps the start up information. Not a biggy. No different than a restart when you insert a program. It is good for the machine to reanalyze itself once in awhile and make things orderly.
That is what the on-off button is for. It is made for a million clicks, so when you hear of computers that last only 2 years B4 they crash(breakdown) know, those are the ones that are running constantly. I shut mine down after use and that may be only a couple of hours and turn it on again in the same day if I desire to do some more stuff. Leaving it on is like leaving the car idling in the driveway even though you are not gonna use it for the day.
Are you continuously connected to the internet -cable connection or DSL - always on?. Then your machine is open to backdoor viruses(which rove the internet like hoodlums roam the streets at night) these guys look for computers that are inactive...and work their way into the machine.
Saves burn out on the monitor(which is a big light bulb).
