I don't believe that you can be allergic to an epidural. But to be on the safe side ask your doctor to give you a small dose of it in the doctors office so that if you have an allergic reaction then then they can rush you to the hospital. And anyway, when you give birth then you are normally in a hospital so you are well taken care of if any reaction may occur.

This is a good question to ask the anesthesiologist (doctor responsible for monitoring and maintenance of the anesthesia) Usually before a planned "c-section" you will have the opportunity to meet with this doctor.

In an emergency "c-section" the life of the baby usually takes precedence and I would not worry about a local skin reaction.

If you have the opportunity to meet with your anesthesiologist, ask about "All" potential reactions that generally happen. Use it as a means to educate yourself but not to worry. Most deliveries are uneventful and end with happy memories.

When in doubt always check with your physician or nurse midwife.

I also have strange reactions to alot of things ( very sensitive things)HIVES and I was shivering for hours, they had to give me benedryl so I wouldn't scratch my skin off ... they told me it was normal and to "ride it out "
I am dreading getting an epidural next month

can I suggest somethin tho' ? make sure they wash there hands before they touch you every time they come into the room that is me being a very paranoid person that I am MRSA runs rapant in hospitals and if you have sensitive skin you can get it if just one nurse or dr touches another patient and then touches you with out washing hands ( it is the biggest cause of secondary infection)

Yes, I did. They scratched my nerve and my leg hurt like crazy for a few seconds.
I needed a general then cause of an emergency.

If I had to do it again. NO epidural, unless necessary. The pain of labor really is bearable.

No reaction here, but the main side effect is a spinal head ache. That is when air gets in where your block was which causes this horrible head ache and the only way to fix it is by getting a blood patch. That is when they draw your own blood and put it right back into where the block was, head ache goes right away.

I had the epi and it was 100% perfect for me. Some of those stories I just read are scary and I'm glad I didn't read that before I gave birth LOL. But yeah I loved my epi, it numbed me like right down the middle of my body. I could feel contractions on one side and not the other. it was weird, but cool It didn't hurt going in at all. After I was done having my son they took it out and All I had to do was pee on my own and I could get up and do my own thing!

I had mine misplaced (too high) and they had to remove it while I was pushing out my son or said I "could" be paralyzed from the sight down. (about mid chest) It had to do with the fact that I have scoliosis though and my spine curves not anything the anesthesiologist did wrong.
I did have subsequent epidurals placed correctly however (below my curve) and they are WONDERFUL!!!

don't forget a major side effect of an epidural is hypotension (a drop in blood pressure), the doctor may place an order in your chart for epinephrine or it may be a standing order in the facility in which you deliver to bring your BP back up

My epidural was fine. No side effects. The doctor has more detailed questions to ask you before you get it... so don't worry.
