A ,dat file is commonly seen in the P2P app Kazaa and it's fellows like Kazaa Lite K++. It's a file that's not been completely downloaded and is stored as a file with the .dat extension until it's completed so sorry, no drugs involved and it does make sense if you are a dedicated P2P user.

Marbin is correct. VideoLAN (now VLC) can open them if there is enough data and assuming that the file is usable in the first place.

Switch to bittorrent, you can't preview the files 9 tenths of the time but it's a better network. The Fasttrack and Gnutella networks have more nasty infections than a 50 year old crack whore. While you're at it, get the UTorrent bt client. Its free, easy, stable and uses almost no resources especially compared to Kazaa.

Good luck.

*.dat video files open without any problem in WMP. If you are trying to play a *.dat file for the first time, windows might ask you to choose a programme to open it with. simply select the media player and you are done.

In south asian countries, Video Cds are more popular than DVDs (dont know now, but at least that was the case about 1 year ago). Those VCDs contain *.dat video files.

Get the windows media player and press open, then select in file types, all files, open the dat file. you can also change the file extention from .dat to .mpg or mpeg, that shoud also work since dat files are mpeg files.

WHOOOOOAAAAA !!! Either someone's smoking some strange weeds or we're on another planet.

First your question does not make sense. A movie file is .mpg or .mov or whatever. .dat files usually contain plain text.

So your question about opening a movie in dat file just don't make sense.
