I don't think so. The death is more symbolic and will serve little or no value to the USA. It might even have been better to give him life imprisonment. Certain sunnis in Iraq migh throw a major fit over the execution (blood, gore, etc., will ensue)

It may not help politically but definitely it will help USA earn the goodwill of so many people who faced attrocities under Saddam rule.

That's a loaded question, depends on how much it pisses off his followers. Unfortunately everything is not all black and white, there is allot of Grey area on this subject.
