I used to send alot of items to my Jap PenPal when I used to talk to her, and the smallest I'e sent was an orange envolope with like 3 DVDs (***which didn't work in Japan by the way***) and I think the price for Economy(surface) was $17 and it wasn't even heavy, wasn't parcel, and wasnt airmail.
Now whenever I sent her parcels it was like 23-30 dollars. No Insurance by the way, and sending it Surface (Economy) makes it cheaper. So all that stuff is prolly gonna go in a box and cost you around $20+ dollars If that novel is hardcover, if not it might be SLIGHTLY less.

It depends on the weight ... and your country!
Go to the post office website for your country, or the country where you are SENDING these items from - and find the international parcel prices page ... it shouldn't be TOO difficult! Then weigh your parcel, and check how much it costs to send it to Japan!
If you don't have scales, ask if you can borrow the scales in your nearest supermarket! If you can't find the website, phone - or VISIT - a local post office.

I hope you realize US DVD's are region 1, and Japan is region 2. A US DVD won't play on a Japanese DVD player. Unless it happens to be a region free DVD, or the other person has a region free DVD player. Cost is something like 80 cents a half ounce. I just sent a calender to a friend there and it cost me a little over $6 !
