i was talking to an amish girl i work with and in the conversation she mentioned something about her fathers business.I said i thought amish werent supposed to have electricity!She said and i quote : We dont have electricity...We have generators.

Sometimes they also have "modern conveniences" in their places of business like electricity and modern mixers in restaurants and cash registers and stuff like that, but they wouldn't have them at home. It really depends on the community.

Each group of Amish decide amongst themselves how much technology they are willing to let into their lives. For example some groups have a telephone, some don't.

What she probably meant by the generator comment is that by not being hooked up to the electrical power grid, by using a generator instead, they were not relying on the modern technology of the outside world to fuel their light. If they own and run the generator themselves then it doesn't matter if the outside world has a blackout.

you have to look at what is accepted in the particular community your talking about. and keep in mind that young people might not not know what's going on. and on some level, the only difference is the amount of toys we have.
