I have found two legitimate work at home sites so far, and one of them made me $494+ in October, over $700 in November, and $782 in December (as of December 28th). Please see this site for more information (links and proof of payment):

The Internet has revolutionized the way that corporations do business. Millions of dollars are being made on the Internet every day. Just look at sites like E-bay and Amazon.com and the explosive growth they have experienced in the last 10 years.
The Internet is also allowing some people to leave the more traditional 9 to 5 work style and make money at home. Many people tele-commute on a regular basis. The Internet also allows those with a full time job to supplement their incomes as well.
Working from home can be a very rewarding experience, but remember: Never join a work at home program that wants you to pay up front. If they were making that much money, they wouldn't need to charge you.

I am afraid that you will find that the people running the website advertising that they will help you with a work from home business are the ones who will make the money - not you - so please beware.
There are so many scams and schemes, especially on the Internet. Be VERY careful of offers that sound too good to be true, jobs that require an up-front fee, envelope-stuffing "jobs", and home-assembly jobs. Do research on every company first, and visit the Better Business Bureau before sending ANY money to start a home business
Here is a sensible site that addresses the issue of home businesses:
http://homeparents.about.com/cs/homebusiness/f/faq_scam.htm
The best home businesses are those designed to meet a local need - such as sewing (alterations, making draperies, etc.), cooking (baking, catering, etc.) and secretarial work (typing term papers for students, typing from dictation from doctor's offices, etc.)
Sit down and list your skills on paper and then think about how you could do something at home that fits your talents.

The folks at SiteSell are on the cutting edge home-based e-commerce. They've helped me and tens of thousands of people launch successful home-based web businesses with SBI!
SiteSell has an absolutely unique perspective about internet business, and life. Take a peek inside the world of SiteSell. In the busy, noisy blogosphere, get ready for some quiet, original, and valuable thinking, not to mention unique insights into SiteSell itself. http://blogit.sitesell.com/wotsnext.html
It works for me. As an example, take a look at how I use the SiteSell. Then see if you can fit something similar around your own area of expertise. Then all you need is a passion and some persistence. This page links you to all the resources I use. http://www.psychic-junkie.com/are-you-psychic.html
